Getting your sperm tested involves looking at several important factors. Here’s a quick look at what our ExSeed sperm tests cover.
Volume
Semen volume is the total quantity of fluid ejaculated. A normal volume for a single ejaculation is more than 1.5ml. A volume consistently below 1.5ml is called hypospermia and can, for example, be caused by hormonal abnormalities or ductal blockage.
Concentration
Sperm concentration is the number of sperm cells per milliliter of semen. A normal concentration is more than 15 million sperm cells/ml. A concentration below 15 million sperm cells/ml is called oligospermia, or azoospermia if there are no sperm cells present at all.
Motility
Sperm motility is the forward swimming motion of sperm cells, which needs to be strong for the sperm to successfully reach and impregnate the egg. ExSeed's algorithm tracks forward motility, also known as progressive motility. If over 32% of sperm cells are motile, this is considered normal, and below this is called asthenozoospermia.
Total motile sperm count is a key measure in assessing male fertility. It refers to the total number of moving (or motile) sperm in a given sample. Essentially, it’s the sperm that can actually swim that have a shot at fertilising an egg, so knowing this number can help predict the likelihood of natural conception.
1. Counting the sperm: First, the app checks how many sperm are in each millilitre of semen—that’s your sperm concentration.
2. Checking for swimmers: Next, it looks at what percentage of those sperm are motile, or actively moving in the right direction.
3. Totalling it up: Finally, it multiplies that concentration and motility with the volume of the sample, which gives you the total number of motile sperm.
