Andreea, Numan’s Office Experience Manager, took a break from her busy schedule of organising team socials, juggling snack demands, and entertaining the office dogs, to chat with us about her experience with Numan’s Weight Loss Programme.

Why did you decide to join the Weight Loss Programme?

I joined Numan in February and have been on the programme since then. Before starting, I looked at many ways to lose weight, including surgery and gastric balloons. However, surgery costs ranged from £4,000 to £10,000 and I would need someone to accompany me.

I also saw mixed results from others who did it - some were left with loose skin which needed even more surgery. After discussing with Dr Luke, I decided to try Numan’s programme first. He said to give it a year to see how much weight I could lose while gradually changing my lifestyle through a better diet and regular exercise. If I wasn't happy with the results, we could consider other options later.

How is the programme going so far?

It’s been a game-changer for me. It helps reduce my appetite, leading to natural weight loss. I prefer this gradual approach as it avoids the severe side effects of surgery and the high costs involved. My skin looks better, and everything feels more manageable.

Did you try any other weight loss methods before, like diets?

I tried everything, including restrictive diets like eating only apples or following juicing diets. Those detox diets were the worst. I hated them.

You see all these diets on the internet promising results, but many of them need you to practically starve yourself. While they might work for a bit, the results don't last once you stop the diet. It was always a battle, and I couldn't wait to finish them. Even now, I still have cravings, but with a balanced life, I don’t feel so bad indulging sometimes.

What are your weight loss goals and future plans?

My goal is to go from 120kg to 80kg. I'm not expecting a sudden transformation, but a gradual change. I’ve currently lost 10kg since I started so it’s going well. My health coach, Amy, has been incredibly helpful in setting future goals and preparing for life after the medication when my appetite returns to normal. The focus is on building a healthier lifestyle that includes regular exercise.

Have you noticed any improvements in your health besides weight loss?

Before, even walking was painful due to the pressure on my legs. Now, I can walk more comfortably and for longer distances without pain. The improvement started around March about a month after starting. Since then, I haven't experienced the same level of discomfort. Also, my blood pressure, which was a concern due to my family history, has improved loads.

How did your weight affect your self-esteem?

For a long time, people would say things like, “You have such a pretty face, but..." which always felt like a backhanded compliment. As a fat person, you often get these comments, unlike skinny people. I had never been this heavy in my life - around 120kg. It becomes a vicious cycle that affects your mental health. I’d think, "How do I lose all these kilos?" and then end up feeling stuck.

Did this affect your daily life?

It impacted my confidence a lot. Things like going for a job interview felt daunting as I felt judged. Shopping was another struggle as finding clothes in my size was really hard. Many shops don’t carry larger sizes, so it was a depressing experience. I preferred online shopping to avoid the disappointment of trying on clothes that didn't fit. It felt like I was stuck in a cycle of trying to lose weight but constantly failing. This led me to seek comfort in unhealthy ways, which only made things worse.

What helped you break this cycle?

Having a conversation with Amy, who understood and supported me was crucial. We talked about making healthier choices together and finding ways to reduce my reliance on comfort foods. This support helped me start making better decisions for my health. Now, seeing the positive changes in me, my family is also motivated to adopt healthier habits. My dad, mum, and sister have all joined the programme!

How has Amy helped you in your weight loss journey?

Amy gave me different recipes to try and helped me manage my meals better. She suggested meal prep companies or finding time to cook myself. She helped me find a balance. You can have junk food, but balance it with a healthy breakfast like eggs and toast.  I now think more about my meals and plan them better. For example, if I have lunch out today, I’ll make sure to prepare a healthy lunch at home tomorrow. It requires more time but it’s worth it. The key is moderation.

How did you feel before trying the programme compared to now?

Before the programme, I lacked confidence and worried about things like fitting into chairs. Now, I feel more confident and capable. For instance, last summer, I struggled to fit into the aeroplane seat on my holiday, but on my recent trip to the Dominican Republic, I felt much more comfortable.

How do you feel about continuing the programme and your future health?

I'm ready and optimistic. The programme has helped improve my health, mental wellbeing, and lifestyle. I’m working with Amy to plan for the future and ensure I maintain my progress even after I stop the medication.
