Starting a new medication can often come with side effects, especially when you first begin treatment or increase your dose. If you’re taking GLP-1 medications, it’s important to understand these potential side effects and know how to manage them.

Here’s a guide to some of the most common side effects and practical tips to combat them:

Nausea

Nausea is one of the most commonly reported side effects when starting GLP-1 medications.1,2 While it can be unpleasant, there are simple strategies to ease the discomfort:

  • Drink ginger or peppermint tea: These natural remedies are known to soothe the stomach.

  • Eat smaller, more frequent portions: Large meals can worsen nausea. Opt for lighter, balanced meals spread throughout the day.

  • Stay hydrated: Sipping water regularly can help.

If nausea persists or you experience more severe symptoms such as ongoing abdominal pain, vomiting, or fever, stop taking your medication and seek urgent medical attention by calling 111 or visiting A&E.

Diarrhoea

Diarrhoea can also occur as your body adjusts to the medication.1,2 Staying hydrated is crucial during this time:

  • Drink plenty of water: Replenishing lost fluids is key to preventing dehydration. If diarrhoea doesn’t improve within seven days, contact your clinical team. For symptoms like abdominal pain, vomiting, or fever, stop taking the medication and seek urgent medical attention.

Constipation

Some patients may experience constipation as a side effect.1,2 Simple lifestyle changes can help manage this:

  • Increase fluid intake: Staying hydrated supports healthy digestion.

  • Boost fibre in your diet: Include fruits, vegetables, and whole grains to promote regular bowel movements.

  • Stay active: Regular movement encourages gut health.

If constipation persists for over three days or symptoms last for more than four weeks, consult your doctor for a physical assessment.

When to seek help

Side effects are common when starting GLP-1 medications, but they are usually manageable. If symptoms become severe or persist, it’s important to seek advice from your healthcare provider.

Always read the Patient Information Leaflet provided with your medication for detailed guidance on potential side effects and how to manage them, and consult your healthcare provider if you have any concerns.

The numan take

Side effects can be an uncomfortable but normal part of starting a new medication as your body adapts to the treatment. While they may cause discomfort, they’re often temporary and manageable with targeted strategies.

By taking these steps, you can better manage the initial adjustment period and continue benefiting from your medication with greater comfort and confidence.
