A well-functioning pen starts with correct use, so be sure to follow these important steps. This will help keep your pen working correctly and make your treatment process smooth and effective.

Let's dive into this step-by-step guide.

Step 1: Cleanliness is key

  • Before you start, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water. This helps prevent infection.

Step 2: Pen inspection

  • Remove the cap, then inspect the pen:

    • Confirm the medication name and dose match your prescription.

    • Check the expiration date (EXP); do not use the pen if it has expired.

    • Look for damage; the pen should not look damaged in any way.

    • Examine the medication; it should be colourless to slightly yellow. Do not use if it's cloudy, discolored, frozen, or contains particles.

Step 3: Prepare the seal

  • Wipe the red inner seal with a swab to sterilise.

Step 4: Select a new needle

  • Choose a new pen needle for each injection to prevent infections and ensure optimal flow. Remove the paper tab from the outer needle shield.

Step 5: Attach the needle

  • Push the capped pen needle straight onto the pen and twist until it's tight.

Step 6: Remove needle shields

  • Outer needle shield: Pull it off and keep it for later use.

  • Inner needle shield: Remove it and dispose of it in your household bin.

Step 7: Prime your pen

  • Turn the dose knob slowly until you hear two clicks and the extended line is shown in the dose window. This is the prime position.

Step 8: Remove air bubbles

  • Hold the pen with the needle pointing upward and gently tap the cartridge holder to gather air bubbles at the top.

Step 9: Prime the pen

  • Release some medicine into the air by pushing the dose knob in until it stops. Slowly count to five while holding the dose knob. Ensure the '0' icon appears in the dose window. Do not inject into your body at this stage.

  • If no medicine appears, repeat steps 7-9 up to two more times. If unsuccessful, change the pen needle and try once more. If the issue persists, contact a clinician.

Step 10: Choose an injection site

  • For self-injection: Use your thigh or stomach, staying at least 5 cm from the belly button.

  • For assistance from others: The back of your upper arm is recommended.

  • Rotate injection sites weekly to prevent skin irritation.

Step 11: Set your dose

  • Turn the dose knob until it stops at the '1' icon to ensure a full 0.6 ml dose.

Step 12: Carry out the injection

  • Insert the needle into the skin at the chosen site.

  • Push the dose knob in completely and count to five. Ensure that the '0' icon is in the dose window before removing the needle.

Step 13: Post-injection check

  • Remove the needle: A small medicine drop might appear on the needle tip - this is normal.

  • Ensure the '0' icon is visible; if not, re-insert the needle to complete the injection. Do not redial or repeat the dose. If you don’t think you received the full dose, don’t start over or repeat the injection. For concerns, contact a clinician.

Step 14: Post-injection care

  • If bleeding occurs, lightly press the site with gauze or a cotton ball without rubbing.

Step 15: Replace needle shield

  • Replace the outer needle shield.

Step 16: Storage

  • Unscrew the capped needle, and dispose of it in a sharps container. Do not store the pen with the needle attached. Replace the pen cap for proper storage and prevent damage.
