We’re committed to helping people achieve their health goals with effective solutions, and that means restricting who we can prescribe medicines to. One question we frequently encounter is, “why don’t we prescribe weight loss medications like Mounjaro or Wegovy for those with diabetes, especially when these treatments are already licensed for type 2 diabetes?”

Well, while these medications are indeed approved for managing type 2 diabetes, and as a result of the potential complications the prescription of these medicines may cause to those who are diabetic and on treatment, we are only authorised to prescribe them for patients who are obese without diabetes.

Understanding Mounjaro and Wegovy

Mounjaro (tirzepatide) and Wegovy (semaglutide) are well-known treatments for both diabetes and weight management. These medicines work by mimicking certain hormones in the body that regulate appetite and blood sugar. When used appropriately, they can be highly effective in supporting weight loss and managing blood glucose levels.

The complexities of diabetes management

Patients with diabetes often have a more complex set of health needs. They might already be on medications specifically tailored to regulate their blood sugar levels. Introducing Mounjaro or Wegovy on top of existing treatments could potentially disrupt blood glucose control, leading to interactions that may complicate their management plan. These interactions could, for instance, result in hypoglycaemia (dangerously low blood sugar levels) or other unforeseen metabolic effects.

Why it’s best prescribed by your physician

An ideal weight loss approach for those with diabetes is a comprehensive treatment plan managed by a healthcare provider who understands their medical history in full. Physicians can assess the potential benefits and risks of adding these medications to a patient’s regimen, ensuring that it complements existing treatments without compromising safety.

If you have type 2 diabetes and are considering medications like Mounjaro or Wegovy, your physician is best positioned to guide you. They can make recommendations that take into account your current treatments, medical history, and any potential drug interactions, ensuring that your blood glucose remains stable and your overall health is prioritised.

The numan take

If you’re managing diabetes and are curious about weight loss options, we encourage you to have an open conversation with your physician. They can help you navigate your choices safely and effectively, allowing you to explore the benefits of these medicines in a way that supports your long-term health.
